A global plastics treaty could cut production 30% by 2040
New research commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers for the Environment and Climate suggests that a global plastic policy framework could cut annual plastic mismanagement by 90% and reduce fossil-fuel plastic production by 30% within 17 years. This coincides with negotiations for a global plastics treaty to combat plastic pollution by 2050. Without action, plastic production could double by 2040, exacerbating pollution and emissions. The report emphasises the need for targets, levies, bans, and recycling rates, recognising financial disparities between developed and developing nations in addressing plastic waste. It calls for comprehensive action to curb plastic pollution and its impact. (
