Ammonia to account for 35-60% of maritime fuel by 2050: study

An EU-funded study by DNV predicts that demand for clean ammonia as a shipping fuel will rise from 2.3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in 2030 to 245 MTPA by 2050, with blue hydrogen (from fossil fuels with carbon capture) supplying 76% of this demand. Despite green hydrogen's growing role, its contribution will be significantly lower. The study emphasises that converting existing ammonia facilities to blue ammonia is more cost-effective than building new green ammonia plants. By 2050, ammonia is expected to account for 35-60% of maritime fuels, depending on emissions scenarios. (Hydrogen Insight)
