Aquaculture antimicrobial resistance tackled in new project
The University of Stirling has received £774,239 ($948,000) from Canada’s International Development Research Centre and the UK Department of Health and Social Care to advance a vaccine addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Vietnam's catfish sector. Led by the Institute of Aquaculture, the project targets behavioural barriers to vaccine uptake, which remains low despite AMR risks from excessive antibiotic use. The immersion-based vaccine, developed during a previous study, offers 70% protection against key bacterial infections. The team will now focus on commercialisation and interventions to promote adoption, addressing concerns such as trust and logistical costs, while exploring post-Covid-19 shifts in vaccine attitudes.
