Around one million farmed salmon lost to jellyfish attack at Norway fish farm
About a million young salmon were lost at a SalMar site in Senja, Norway, due to a jellyfish invasion, specifically the species Apolemia uvaria, known as "string jellyfish." The influx threatened the fish's well-being, prompting SalMar to destroy all the fish at the Ørnfjordbotn site for welfare reasons. The jellyfish incident is rare, with SalMar noting that jellyfish are one of several risk factors in fish farming. The company stated that the financial impact is limited to the value of the destroyed fish and won't affect the guided slaughter volume. Another incident involved mortality and destruction of fry at SalMar's hatchery in Jøvika, Senja, caused by defective installation of barriers in a fish tank. (
