Australia to protect 52% of its oceans, more than any other country
Australia will expand the Heard and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve by over 300,000 sq km, increasing protection to 52% of its ocean territory, surpassing the global 30% target. The sub-Antarctic marine park, home to unique wildlife and ecosystems, will safeguard waters from mining and new fisheries. However, conservationists highlight that critical habitats for species like penguins and albatross lack sanctuary-level protection. Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek hailed the move as a significant environmental milestone, while scientists urge increased investment to meet broader conservation goals effectively.
