BECCS could produce carbon-negative energy

A group of experts advising the UK government on its biomass strategy has suggested that bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) using forest biomass could deliver net permanent removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. However, they emphasise that this can only be achieved with tight regulation and robust monitoring of supply chains and forest stocks. BECCS involves capturing CO2 emissions from biomass combustion and storing them, making it a carbon-negative technology. Despite its potential, concerns remain about the sustainability of biomass supply chains and the counterfactual impact of harvesting trees for biomass. (Reuters)
