Breadfruit's role in climate solutions and food security: study
A University of Hawai'i study has revealed that breadfruit trees store less carbon than other broadleaf species in wet environments, but their rapid growth rate may enhance agroforestry systems for greater CO2 sequestration. Despite their lower carbon storage in orchards, breadfruit offers valuable food security benefits, with the potential for significant impact when integrated into diverse agroforestry plots. The study calls for further research to fully understand breadfruit's sustainability potential, emphasising its importance beyond carbon sequestration, including food sovereignty and ecosystem benefits.
