Canada to ban open-net salmon farming in British Columbia by 2029

Canada will prohibit open-net pen salmon farming in British Columbia's (BC) coastal waters within five years, aiming to protect declining wild Pacific salmon populations. Announced by Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, the transition to closed containment technologies has been welcomed by environmental groups but opposed by the aquaculture industry. The BC Salmon Farmers Association warns of significant job losses and economic impact. The government plans to support affected communities and First Nations, emphasising sustainable aquaculture and environmental conservation. The decision aligns with public opinion and is backed by over 120 First Nations in the province. (The Guardian)
