Carbon capture's effectiveness is under scrutiny: comment
As nations gather for COP28, the role of carbon capture in climate strategies comes into focus. Carbon capture involves capturing emissions at the source or removing them from the atmosphere. There are currently 42 operational commercial carbon capture projects, storing 49 million tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to 0.13% of global emissions. Cost remains a hurdle, ranging from €14 ($15.33) to €916 per tonne, with developers seeking profitable models. Storage limitations based on geology and community concerns about infrastructure also pose challenges to widespread deployment. The industry is under scrutiny for scalability, cost-effectiveness, and public acceptance. (
