Chile's salmon market booms as government plan to diversify market
Chilean salmonid exports soared to $6.6bn in 2022, marking a 27.4% year-over-year increase and solidifying the industry as the country's second-largest export sector after mining. However, increased environmental scrutiny of salmon farming has led Chile's President Gabriel Boric to oppose further production expansion. In response, Chilean economic development agency Corfo is advocating for the farming of alternative species, such as Pacific oyster, golden kingklip, and floating kelp. Corfo aims to accelerate and consolidate the development of these species in the Los Lagos and Coquimbo regions, emphasising sustainability and local economic impact. (
