Chile's salmon industry embarks on antibiotic reduction initiative

Chile's salmon farming sector has launched Project Yelcho, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at reducing antibiotic use and preventing bacterial diseases in aquaculture. Supported by Sernapesca and the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), the project involves eleven companies that produce nearly 90% of Chile's farmed salmon. The first-of-its-kind public-private collaboration seeks to foster innovation through technical partnerships and data analytics provided by Aquabench. Project Yelcho not only represents a significant step toward sustainable practices but also aligns with the World Health Organization’s antimicrobial resistance plan. By fostering collaborations with pharmaceutical companies and leveraging scientific expertise, the project aspires to develop effective non-antibiotic solutions to maintain fish health and welfare.
