Christmas Island red crab migration disrupted by dry weather

Unusually dry weather has disrupted the annual migration of Christmas Island red crabs to mate at the sea. With over 100 million crabs unique to the island, protected by Australian law, the delay is unprecedented. The island received only half its average rainfall, affecting the crabs' migration for the first time in February since tracking began in the 1980s. Brendan Tiernan of Parks Australia noted the island's desperate, dusty conditions as a contributing factor, highlighting the significance of this environmental anomaly. (Reuters)
