North Sea CO2 storage will be equivalent to natural gas extracted: report

A report by energy consultancy Xodus indicates that by 2050, the volume of CO2 injected into the North Sea will be equivalent to the natural gas currently extracted from the basin. Around 100 reservoirs and over 7,500 km of new pipelines will be required to capture carbon from onshore emissions capturing and gathering sites. The report, which assessed 560 potential storage sites, existing North Sea gas pipelines, and potential new infrastructure, revealed that 40% of European industrial emissions occur within 500 km of the North Sea, making it advantageous for reducing carbon capture, utilisation, and storage project costs.
