# Cod numbers in critical decline due to overfishing and climate change

Cod populations worldwide are facing critical declines due to a combination of historical overfishing and the impact of climate change, particularly warming waters affecting their ability to reproduce. A study by the University of Aberdeen highlights the cultural importance of cod in the western world, from its role in British cuisine to its significance in Viking exploration and international conflicts. As waters warm, cod reproduction decreases, posing a serious threat to populations. Efforts to adapt to new fishing realities are needed, including considering alternative species that are appearing in traditional cod-fishing areas.
