Decarbonising ports by 2040: comment

Maritime transport is vital to global trade but contributes heavily to emissions. Morten Johansen, a port operator leader, outlines a plan for ports to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 and net-zero emissions by 2050. Three core strategies are proposed: electrifying port machinery and equipment including cranes to slash diesel use; harnessing renewable energy sources such as solar and hydroelectric to power facilities; and researching alternative vessel fuels and digital solutions for efficiency. Though the transition may be incremental, the environmental costs of shipping can no longer be discounted. Decarbonising ports is an urgent priority to set an example for the whole maritime industry.
