# Devastating coral bleaching event turns Great Barrier Reef into 'graveyard'

A recent mass coral bleaching event has devastated the Great Barrier Reef, leaving it as a "graveyard," according to coral bleaching expert Terry Hughes. The event, described as the worst recorded, has affected up to 90% of the reef's corals, with many turning white or exhibiting neon colours before dying. Despite being a natural wonder, the reef's future is uncertain unless immediate action is taken to cut fossil fuel emissions and limit global heating.
