# Enhancing seawater's carbon storage using electrochemistry

University of Calgary researchers are developing PEACH (Practical Electrochemical Air Capture and Hydrogen), an electrochemical cell-based instrument for enhancing seawater's carbon storage capacity. PEACH captures alkaline sodium ions, creating an "alkalinity pump" that draws ions from deep water and releases sodium hydroxide at shallower depths. The process promotes carbon sequestration in the ocean, with hydrogen as a by-product. While scalable for ocean deployment, PEACH's modular design allows versatility, potentially aiding carbon removal in diverse settings, emphasising its role in future climate mitigation strategies.
