# Australian environmental groups call for virgin plastic tax

Environmental groups and Indigenous rangers cleaning northern Australian beaches are urging the federal government to tax products lacking recycled materials. Marcus Mungal Lacey, of Gumurr Marthakal Rangers, highlights the threat of plastic pollution to marine life and food security. Sea Shepherd and the rangers removed seven tonnes of plastic from Elcho Island, calling for a tax on virgin plastics to reduce pollution. Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek is working on new packaging rules to promote recycling. Environmentalists also stress the importance of individual responsibility in preserving the environment.
