EU to establish world's first carbon removal certification scheme
EU legislators agreed to establish the world's inaugural registry for certified CO2 removals from eco-farming and industrial processes. This aims to upscale high-quality carbon removal to achieve the EU's net-zero emissions goal by 2050. The framework includes four types of removals, including permanent and temporary storage, with a focus on avoiding deforestation. Certification remains voluntary for now, but only certified units can be used to meet the EU's climate objectives. The next phase involves developing certification methodologies and creating an EU-wide registry within four years. This move is expected to foster private investment and enhance the voluntary carbon market. (
