European shellfish growers seek common aquaculture policy to tackle sector downturn
The European Mollusc Producers Association (EMPA) has urged the EU to establish a Common Aquaculture Policy to combat the sector's long-term decline. At an event in Strasbourg last month, the EMPA, representing 90% of Europe’s shellfish producers, launched a manifesto advocating for cleaner water, increased farming areas, and recognition of shellfish farming’s ecosystem services. The sector, worth €1.17bn ($1.24bn) annually, faces challenges from pollution and disease. The EMPA calls for policies that triple shellfish farming areas and offer compensatory payments for environmental benefits like water filtration. The group stresses that sustainable aquaculture is vital for food security, climate goals, and reversing biodiversity loss. (
