Construction of Europe's largest CCS facility is set to commence next year
Construction of Europe's largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility, the "Porthos" project, is set to commence in the Rotterdam port area next year. The project, involving the Rotterdam port authorities and Dutch gas company Gasunie, will require a €1.3bn ($1.38bn) investment and is expected to become operational by 2026. CO2 emissions from refineries and chemical plants operated by companies like Shell, Exxon Mobil, Air Liquide, and Air Products will be transported to empty gas fields under the North Sea, reducing the Netherlands' annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 2% for 15 years starting in 2026.
