Expert review seeks to optimise aquafeed protein sources
A comprehensive review led by Brett Glencross, with contributions from Margareth Øverland and Richard Newton, explores the diverse protein sources utilised in aquafeeds, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each. Considering marine ingredients, processed animal proteins, single-cell protein resources, and grain protein sources, the study underscores the lack of a perfect ingredient but suggests that understanding each component's attributes can enhance feed formulations' adaptability. The review employs a Strength-Weakness-Opportunity-Threat (SWOT) analysis for each protein class and proposes strategies for improving feed security, such as better resource management, zero waste, and the development of non-competing resources. The findings indicate that while advancements in ingredient processing show promise, scaling new resources to impactful volumes remains a challenge. This study provides a roadmap for optimising aquafeed formulations through the complementary use of various protein sources, thereby supporting the sustainable growth of aquaculture. (
