The United Nations' FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI) has endorsed new Guidelines for Sustainable Aquaculture (GSA) to establish best practices globally. Developed with input from NOAA and other stakeholders, the guidelines were approved at COFI's 36th session in Rome. The GSA aims to enhance aquaculture productivity, resilience, and sustainability, contributing to poverty alleviation and hunger reduction. It provides administrative, legal, and policy frameworks for governments to develop effective aquaculture policies. The guidelines emphasise sustainability, cultural sensitivity, and transparency, supporting the FAO's Blue Transformation initiative to create productive and resilient agrifood systems.
