Harnessing marine algae for eco-friendly plastic and fuel production

Researchers from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have discovered a sustainable method to enhance algae growth for commercial purposes. By coupling algae cultivation with marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), they used the acid byproduct of an electrochemical process to accelerate algae growth. The method not only boosts algae production but also helps manage ocean acidification. The findings suggest that integrating mCDR with aquaculture could lead to eco-friendly plastics and fuels, offering a promising approach to mitigate climate change. (Phys.org)
