IATTC adopts electronic monitoring standards to enhance fishing vessel oversight

The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) has established new minimum standards for electronic monitoring on fishing vessels, a move praised by sustainability-focused NGOs. Meeting in early September, the IATTC responded to calls from groups like Pew and the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) to increase vessel monitoring in the Eastern Pacific high seas. These new standards aim to enhance oversight, provide crucial data for fisheries management, and improve climate-related decision-making. ISSF lauded the progress, highlighting how the move can increase scientific data availability and demonstrate the efficiency of regional fishery management organisations. (Seafood Source
