Iceland permits chemical methods to combat sea lice

Veterinary authorities in Iceland have imposed additional measures to combat sea lice infestations in the Westfjords region, the country's primary salmon farming area. The situation has worsened recently, prompting authorities to authorise chemical treatment in at least eight Westford farming areas, using medicines and medicated feed. These measures aim to keep sea lice numbers at a minimum during the winter. However, MAST (Matvælastofnun), the Icelandic Food Agency, also stressed the importance of finding alternative methods to control sea lice infestation due to concerns about environmental impact and potential drug resistance.
