Limited ocean knowledge hinders effective marine CDR: study

Limited understanding of ocean processes is impeding marine carbon dioxide removal (CDR), with some methods being premature and potentially misguided, according to scientists from the University of East Anglia and the University of Tasmania. Published in Environmental Research Letters, the study reviews four nature-based techniques—shellfish cultivation, seaweed farming, coastal blue carbon restoration, and whale population rewilding. Despite non-climatic benefits, these methods offer minimal CDR contributions and could be 'dead ends' for climate mitigation. The researchers call for prioritising R&D funding on safer, more scalable, and verifiable CDR approaches to effectively limit global warming. (Carbon Herald)
