Maersk launches world's first bio-methanol cargo ship

Maersk, having sold its oil division to TotalEnergies in 2017, aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. They launched the "Laura," a vessel set to reduce CO2 emissions by 100 tonnes daily, compared to fuel oil usage. The ship, built in South Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries, features a dual-fuel engine and will transport 2,136 containers. Maersk's CEO, Vincent Clerc, emphasised the use of green methanol as a scalable solution to meet net-zero emissions goals. Maritime transport, responsible for 2.89% of greenhouse gas emissions, is a focus for Maersk's sustainable transition. They plan to produce green methanol globally, targeting 10% fleet decarbonisation by 2030. (France24)
