Majority of carbon offset projects "likely junk": analysis
A recent analysis by Corporate Accountability and The Guardian found that the majority of environmental projects used to offset greenhouse gas emissions are likely ineffective. Of the top 50 emission offset projects that have sold the most carbon credits globally, 78% were classified as 'likely junk' due to fundamental failings that undermine their promised emission reductions. Another 16% were considered problematic with 6% undetermined due to a lack of information. The analysis raises concerns about the credibility and effectiveness of the voluntary carbon trading industry, which has been embraced by governments and corporations but may not deliver meaningful emissions reductions.
