A global study published in Science Advances demonstrates the positive impact of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on recreational fisheries. Led by the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, the research shows that MPAs increase the presence of "trophy-size" fish in adjacent areas, with effects becoming evident over 20 years. In the US, saltwater recreational fishing generated $73.8bn in sales impacts in 2017, supporting 487,000 jobs. The study underscores the importance of MPAs for marine biodiversity and provides guidance for management agencies. It reveals that successful MPAs depend on community support, enforcement, and effective management, highlighting the long-term benefits for both nature and local fisheries. (Phys.org)
