Middle East conflict causing shipping emissions spike
The crisis in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, due to missile and drone attacks, is impacting efforts to reduce container shipping's carbon footprint. Data from CargoMetrics shows that daily CO2 emissions per TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) for ultra-large container vessels were 24% higher in the first 10 days of 2024 compared to the average for 2023. The disruption caused by Houthi attacks has led vessels to avoid the Suez Canal, opting for routes around the Cape of Good Hope, resulting in increased emissions. The wet and dry bulk sectors have not experienced a similar rise in emissions. (
