Molasses spill off Cumbria threatens marine wildlife
A ship grounding off Cumbria spilled 300 tonnes of molasses into the sea, posing a threat to marine life, warns a wildlife charity. Molasses, sinking unlike oil, can smother seafloor animals and clog fish gills. While bacteria can decompose it, oxygen depletion may harm other species. Eventually, molasses will dissolve and disperse, but concerns remain for Allonby Bay, a Highly Protected Marine Area. The vessel, Zapadnyy, previously faced similar issues in 2016. (
