Most of world's largest MPAs lack adequate protections: study

A new study reveals that only a third of the world’s largest marine protected areas (MPAs) implement effective conservation measures. Published in Conservation Letters, the analysis shows that another third permits destructive activities like mining and commercial fishing, while many MPAs exist only on paper without real protections. The findings, from researchers at the Marine Conservation Institute, challenge the global 30×30 conservation goal. Experts urge governments to enhance protection measures in existing MPAs to achieve genuine conservation outcomes. (Inside Climate News)
