'Namgis First Nation champions land-based fish farming as sustainable model
The 'Namgis First Nation has highlighted the success of its land-based fish farming facility near Port McNeill, B.C., as a sustainable alternative to open-net salmon farms. Operated by Kuterra, the closed-containment system initially farmed Atlantic salmon but now produces steelhead, harvesting approximately four tonnes weekly. The federal government has mandated open-net salmon farms to transition to closed systems within five years to mitigate risks to wild salmon populations. Former 'Namgis Chief Don Svanvik emphasised the cultural and ecological significance of wild salmon, expressing concern over the government’s forthcoming transition plan and its potential impact on wild stocks.
