New Zealand opens first land-based yellowtail kingfish facility to boost aquaculture industry

A land-based recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility for yellowtail kingfish has opened in Ruakākā, New Zealand, aiming to demonstrate the commercial viability of land-based fish farming. Run by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA), the facility is designed to produce 600 tonnes of fish annually, contributing to New Zealand's goal of achieving NZ $3bn in annual aquaculture sales by 2035. The project, a joint venture with Northland Regional Council, is seen as a "proof of concept" for environmentally friendly aquaculture, with hopes it will spur investment in larger RAS operations and other marine species.
