No evidence of EU aquaculture growth despite significant investment: report

A special report by the European Court of Auditors reveals that EU aquaculture has experienced little growth, with no reliable indicators to track sustainability or the contribution of increased EU funding. Despite the €1.2bn ($ 1.3bn)allocated from 2014-2020, overall EU aquaculture production has remained stagnant, and some of the largest producers, Italy and France, have experienced decreases. The report also highlights weaknesses in the monitoring system and notes inconsistencies and unreliability in reported data on the achievements of EU funds. The auditors express concerns about the inability to determine the funds' contribution to the sector's environmental and social sustainability and competitiveness. (The Fish Site)
