Non-UK vessels lead harmful bottom-trawling in MPAs
In 2023, over 25% of harmful bottom-trawling activities in UK marine protected areas (MPAs) were conducted by just 10 vessels, none flagged to the UK, according to an Oceana UK analysis. Using Global Fishing Watch data, the study revealed around 100,000 hours of industrial fishing in MPAs, with 33,000 hours involving bottom-towing gear. The 10 non-UK vessels accounted for 27% of suspected bottom trawling. Oceana UK is urging a ban on bottom trawling in all MPAs to protect ocean wildlife and mitigate climate impacts, as public support for stronger ocean protection laws remains high. (
