North America's first commercial ocean-based CO2 removal facility planned

Engineering has begun on North America's first commercial-scale, ocean-based carbon dioxide removal facility in Quebec. Developed by Equatic Inc. and Deep Sky Inc., the plant will remove 110,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, including 10% ocean-borne emissions, and produce 3,600 tonnes of hydrogen. Using UCLA's seawater electrolysis process, the facility will separate CO2 from seawater and neutralise its acidity. The extracted CO2 will be stored as solid calcium and magnesium-based substances for construction materials. Estimated to cost $366m, the plant aims to start operations by 2028. A feasibility study by Arup is underway, with a final investment decision expected by 2026. (Engineering News Record)
