Norway approves dumping mining waste into fjord

Norway's government has won a court battle against environmental organisations Friends of the Earth Norway and Nature and Youth, allowing private mining company Nordic Mining to dump 170 million tonnes of waste into the Førde fjord. The decision makes Norway, Papua New Guinea, and Turkey the only countries granting new licenses for marine waste disposal. Environmental groups argue the dumping will threaten marine ecosystems and biodiversity, accusing the government of ignoring advice from the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research. Norway recently approved commercial deep-sea mining, the first country to do so. (Mining Technology)
