Nova Scotia streamlines shellfish aquaculture approvals
Nova Scotia has introduced a streamlined process for shellfish aquaculture approvals in the Municipality of Argyle, marking a significant shift from the lengthy procedures typically associated with aquaculture licensing in the province. The new initiative, the first of its kind in Canada, designates 53 pre-approved sites specifically for shellfish or marine plant farming. Spearheaded by the local municipality, which conducted extensive preparatory work including scientific data collection and public consultations, the new process significantly reduces the time required to obtain aquaculture leases—potentially saving applicants two to three years. The development, announced by the province’s fisheries and aquaculture minister, Kent Smith, is poised to enhance productivity and meet growing market demands efficiently. (
