Oceans can absorb more carbon than expected: study
The strength of the ocean's biological carbon pump, which removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it in the ocean, has been estimated at 15 petagrams of carbon per year at a depth of 73 meters, according to a study published in Nature. The biological carbon pump is essential for regulating Earth's climate, and the estimate is higher than previous model estimates ranging from 5 to 12 petagrams of carbon per year. The research used an inverse model based on direct measurements of nutrients collected over decades, providing a more robust baseline for calibrating climate change prediction models compared to satellite-based estimates.
