Onboard carbon capture emerges as key decarbonisation strategy for shipping
DNV and the Blue Sky Maritime Coalition (BSMC) have jointly highlighted onboard carbon capture as a critical solution for reducing CO2 emissions in the maritime industry. DNV sees this technology as increasingly viable and claims it will allow the continued use of fossil fuels while significantly cutting emissions. By 2030, the demand for CO2 storage from onboard capture could reach 76 million tonnes. BSMC’s report outlines the technological, regulatory, and logistical challenges, emphasising the need for collaboration across sectors, including port facilities and regulatory bodies like the IMO, to ensure the successful implementation of this decarbonisation method.
