Over 800,000 wild fish killed by delousing equipment: report
Last year, tens of thousands of herring were killed in salmon delousing operations in British Columbia, Canada, according to data from the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Approximately 817,000 wild fish, primarily herring, perished in 2022 due to the use of technology designed to remove sea lice during salmon farming operations. Conservation groups, including the Watershed Watch Salmon Society, raised concerns, with claims that juvenile herring caught in salmon hydro-delousing equipment had their eyes blown out. The data revealed a nearly five-fold increase in wild fish killed compared to the previous year and a 21-fold increase from 2020. (
