Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) and PML Applications have validated a novel ocean carbon dioxide removal (oCDR) technique by enhancing the alkalinity of treated wastewater before sea discharge a safe and effective way of deacidifying seawater, which could then draw down atmospheric carbon dioxide. In a 2022 trial off St Ives Bay, Cornwall, Planetary Technologies added diluted magnesium hydroxide to wastewater, increasing alkalinity and reducing dissolved CO2 levels by up to 74%. The alkalinity returned to normal quickly, confirming reversibility. The trial showed limited impact, but confirmed the method's potential. (The Engineer)
