Researchers develop world's first system for farming shipworms
Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed the world's first system for farming shipworms, known as "Naked Clams," with the aim of rebranding the marine pest into a food-producing system. The shipworms are fast-growing bivalves that convert waste wood into highly nutritious protein. They have high levels of Vitamin B12 and can be fortified with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids by adding an algae-based feed. The fully enclosed aquaculture system eliminates water quality and food safety concerns, making it suitable for urban settings. The researchers believe Naked Clams could serve as a sustainable alternative for meat and fish. (
