Researchers have developed 13 principles to improve ocean governance
In response to the United Nations' call for transformative change outlined in the '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,' a collaborative effort across ecological, social, and legal disciplines has resulted in the development of 13 principles. These principles strategically connect transformative ocean research to governance and complement the UN Decade for Ocean Science. The principles have been derived through a rigorous consensus-building process and can interact in supporting, neutral, or sometimes conflicting ways. They are recommended to be applied as a comprehensive set to address current ocean-use practices based on economic growth models that perpetuate inequities and environmental decline. These principles aim to foster transformative change in ocean governance for the betterment of ecosystems and society. (
