Rising temperatures are threatening Scottish salmon farms

Scotland has been experiencing an unprecedented Category 4 marine heatwave since March 2023, causing mass marine mortalities and sea lice infestations on salmon farms. Rising sea temperatures create an optimal breeding environment for sea lice, leading to rampant reproduction, weakening the fish, and causing premature deaths. In 2022, salmon deaths doubled, and by September 2023, 8.9 million fish had died prematurely on salmon farms. Sea lice are now spreading from farms to wild salmon, posing a threat to both. Additionally, rising sea temperatures also benefit jellyfish, which can sting salmon and block their gills, further impacting aquaculture. (Euronews)
