SafetyNet Technologies can reduce bycatch by over 60%: study
Fisherman Ian Wightman, based in Largs Boat Harbour in Scotland, is using technology from SafetyNet Technologies to reduce bycatch in his daily langoustine catches. By attaching LED lights to the fishing net, certain fish are attracted, while unwanted mammals like dolphins are repelled. The lights can improve catches and efficiency, and studies suggest they can reduce bycatch by 63%. SafetyNet Technologies also provides a camera called CatchCam to monitor the net underwater and Enki, a data collection system that measures parameters like pressure, depth, and temperature of the surrounding waters.
