In Chile, a groundbreaking initiative leveraging satellite imagery and machine learning is transforming the monitoring of harmful algal blooms (HABs), critical to protecting the aquaculture industry. Watermind, founded by Fernando and Raimundo Manterola, utilises high-resolution, multispectral satellite data to detect and track HABs. Partnering with two salmon farming companies, Watermind monitors specific regions prone to HABs during the high-risk months from October to May. Recent data pinpointed increased algal activity in neighbourhood 17B, aiding in preemptive measures. The technology collaboration, which includes partnerships with Planet Labs PBC and affiliations with Corfo and Google’s sustainability initiatives, is a significant advancement in environmental monitoring, ensuring timely responses to potential outbreaks and minimising economic losses in aquaculture.
