Scientists investigate coral gene sequencing in bid to save reefs from climate crisis

As coral reefs face widespread collapse due to global warming, scientists from the Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics (ASG) project are working to uncover the genetic secrets of coral to help save them. Led by the Wellcome Sanger Institute, researchers are sequencing coral DNA to better understand the symbiotic relationship between coral and algae, which is crucial for coral survival. With reefs increasingly devastated by bleaching, the project aims to identify coral species that can resist rising temperatures and diseases. The goal is to eventually breed or genetically enhance corals to create resilient "super-corals" capable of withstanding climate change. (The Guardian)
